No ocean in this day has completely avoided the effects of human pressure, human pressure takes form in many, direct and indirect ways. Let us see-
1. Overfishing
2. Pollution
3. Introduced species
4. Climate change
Sustainable Solutions–
Fishing should only be allowed to those with a license and a permit, strict laws should be implied for fishing including a mandatory check of the boats so that no boat exceeds the limit on fishing, the limits and restrictions are as follows-
Artisanal boats- 1,000kg/a day
Medium Sized boats- 5,000kg/a day
Large commercial boats- 10,000kg/a day
This should be implied along with more precise restrictions.
Seasonal and area based restrictions-
Fishing should not be allowed in spawning seasons
No-fishing zones should be implied in habitats of endangered aquatic life
Gear restrictions-
Prohibit bottom trawling, fish-mesh nets and gillnets (should only be allowed to those with special permits)
Encourage use of selective and focused fishing equipment to prevent and reduce bycatch
There are many ways to prevent pollution, for example-
Conserving water
Shopping wisely
Fishing responsibly
Reduce pollutants
Reduce Waste
Reduce vehicle pollution
Use less energy
Practice Safe boating
Respect habitats
Never release water garden plants, live food (crab, fish etc) or live bait into water bodies, like oceans, rivers, lakes etc.
Ways to prevent climate change include-
Saving energy at home
Use public transport more often or walk or cycle to short distances
Don’t waste food and only buy what you can use, make compost of the rest
Reduce, reuse, repair and recycle
Use renewable energy (solar panels)
Switch to electric vehicles
Raise awareness
