The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is celebrated to: 

  • Promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities 
  • Increase awareness of the contributions of people with disabilities 
  • Mobilize support for the dignity of people with disabilities 
  • Ensure the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of society 
  • Increase the participation of people with disabilities in decision-making processes 

The United Nations General Assembly established the IDPD in 1992. The 2024 theme is "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future".
