The 11th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is to make cities and human settlements safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable:
Goal
To plan and renew cities and other human settlements to provide access to basic services, energy, housing, transport, and green public spaces.
Challenges
Cities are not always ready for rapid urbanization, which can lead to slums, air pollution, and limited open public spaces. Cities also account for 60–80% of energy consumption and 75% of carbon emissions.
Solutions
Cities can be made more sustainable by:
Improving urban planning: Cities can be planned to reduce sprawl and improve transportation systems.
Improving access to basic services: Cities can provide access to safe and adequate housing, clean air, and basic services.
Improving green spaces: Cities can improve the quality of green spaces and create new ones.
Improving public spaces: Cities can make public spaces safe and empowering for all women and girls.
Improving energy efficiency: Cities can reduce energy consumption and adopt green energy systems.
Individual participation
Individuals can participate by fixing up local parks, creating rooftop gardens, or participating in community composting programs.
