Here are some facts about deep oceans ..
Hydrothermal vents
These vents are located deep beneath the ocean's surface and spew scalding water from the Earth's crust. They are found in volcanically active areas.
Giant isopods
These crustaceans can grow up to 16 inches in size and live in deep, cold waters. They can withstand depths of over 7,000 feet and feed on dead animals.
Seamounts
These special places in the deep sea are surrounded by swirling currents that bring nutrients from the depths or trap plankton from above. These nutrients feed the growth of fan corals, sea whips, and glass sponges, which in turn host other deep-sea animals.
Cold seeps
These extreme deep-sea environments occur when fluid migrates upward from deep strata to the seafloor. They mostly occur in geologically active and passive continental margins and trenches.
Deep-sea trenches
These long, narrow, steep-sided depressions in the ocean bottom contain the maximum oceanic depths.
Oceans are enormous
The oceans are so large and deep that it is essentially impossible to fully understand them. Humans cannot survive the crushing pressure that is found in the deepest parts of the ocean.
Gold in the ocean
The National Ocean Service estimates that there is approximately 20 million tonnes of gold in the ocean's water.
