Today is 2nd October which is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti also known as Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the person who set India free from the British Rule on 15th August 1947, with a non- violence weapon called Satyagraha. Gandhi Ji got the name 'Mahatma' from Rabindranath Tagore in 1915. Rabindranath Tagore used the title to express his admiration for Gandhi's moral and spiritual qualities, and to acknowledge Gandhi's wisdom, compassion, and courage. The Sanskrit word "Mahatma" means "great soul". Not only Mahatma Gandhi made India independent but he had also started the Salt march, also known as the Salt Satyagraha, Dandi March, and the Dandi Satyagraha, which was an act by Mahatma Gandhi and 78 of his trusted volunteers to protest against the British government's salt tax and monopoly on salt production. It was a 24 day march which lasted from 12 March 1930 to 6 April 1930. Because of this Mahatma Gandhi was called "Bapu" as a term of endearment for "father" in Gujarati. It was a polite way for his loved ones to address him, considering his age, wisdom, and position. We can see Mahatma Gandhi's picture on the Indian banknote.
