In the modern world, it is rare to find a society comprised of only one group of people; cultural diversity is not only the contemporary way of life but also influences social well-being. Cultural diversity is when people from different ethnic backgrounds coexist and live together in harmony, with each group respecting and appreciating other people's cultures. Therefore, a culturally diversified society is a society where people from different ethnic groups, religions, and races coexist together and form a larger community. Cultural diversity is characterized by the availability of multiple cultures in one society, each culture having its distinct features, interculturalism, and preservation of cultural values. The dominant culture is always present among the various cultures in culturally diversified societies. Dominant culture stands out as the largest and the most powerful societal group. Among the dominant group, a cultural group is guided by social norms and expectations known as the hegemonic culture. However, hegemonic culture is always underrepresented since the dominant cultural group is the most influential and possesses the most power in society. In this regard, it is evident that the dominant culture establishes hegemonic culture. Elements of a culturally diversified society are customs, social values, languages, gender interaction, and social organization. However, cultural diversity has vital benefits for society and the people involved. For instance, cultural diversity brings a peaceful coexistence among individuals; it helps people acknowledge and respect other people's cultures and promotes creativity as people learn new skills through interaction with people from different ethnic groups. Cultural diversity has challenges, such as prejudice, discrimination, cultural conflicts, stereotyping, and Sectarianism. Some of these challenges are easily avoided if people support the diversification of culture. Some of the various ways of supporting cultural diversity include outsourcing knowledge about other people's cultures from books and literature materials, promoting understanding in terms of cultural diversification, and avoiding imposing values that may lead to cultural conflicts with other cultures.
Cultural diversity stands out as an essential aspect of modern society. The importance of cultural diversity is that it offers an opportunity for inclusiveness for both the majority and the minorities in the society and helps to promote respect and acknowledge the presence of other people from different ethnic groups. Therefore, it is essential to maintain cultural diversity in societies. Some ways of maintaining cultural diversity are by reducing barriers that may hinder promoting cultural diversity, encouraging people to interact with others from different cultural backgrounds, and advocating diversification of culture in public places, institutions, and working environments.
