Can Geminid Meteor shower be seen from Delhi's Night sky?
The Geminid meteor shower is one of the most spectacular astronomical events of the year. It occurs every mid-December when the Earth passes through the debris left behind by the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. During its peak, the Geminids are known for producing bright, slow-moving meteors that light up the night sky.
Since India lies in the Northern Hemisphere, the Geminid meteor shower can be seen from our country, including Delhi. The best time to observe it is after midnight till early morning, when the sky is naturally darker.
However, in reality, watching the Geminid meteor shower from Delhi is extremely difficult. This is mainly due to severe air pollution, dense smog, and heavy light pollution from the city. These factors reduce sky clarity and block faint celestial objects, allowing only a few bright meteors to be visible—or sometimes none at all.
This situation highlights how air pollution affects not only human health but also our connection with nature and the universe. Cleaner air would mean clearer skies and better opportunities to enjoy such beautiful cosmic events.
Protecting our environment is essential—for our health, our future, and our stars.
