Imagine India was like a big beautiful house, and the Britishers were like guests who didn’t want to leave. They had been staying for a long time, about 200 years, and the people of India were very unhappy. They didn’t have the freedom to make their own decisions, like choosing their own rulers or what to do with their own land.
Then, after many years of hard work and a lot of bravery, the people of India, led by great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, decided they wanted to go home! They fought for their freedom and finally, on August 15th, 1947, the guests, the Britishers, left and India was free!
It was a big day of celebration! The people of India rejoiced, singing, dancing, and flying kites, which symbolize freedom. They had their own flag, the Tricolour, which was raised at the Red Fort, the main government building in Delhi, by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, their first Prime Minister.
