International Compost Awareness Week (1 May - 7 May) is celebrated during the first full week of May to highlight the importance of composting in creating healthier soils, reducing waste, and combating climate change. Composting turns everyday organic waste, like fruit peels, leaves, and garden trimmings, into nutrient-rich soil that supports plant growth and restores ecosystems.
For students, this week is a great opportunity to understand the cycle of life in nature and how small actions at home or school can make a big difference. It connects directly to SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13: Climate Action, showing how managing waste sustainably helps both the environment and the community.
GoSharpener Activity
In GoSharpener schools, the #CompostForChange Challenge inspired students to set up compost bins in classrooms, canteens, and gardens. They learned how to separate “green” waste (like food scraps) from “brown” waste (like dry leaves) and keep the compost pile healthy.
Some schools created “Compost Gardens” where the compost made during the week was used to grow vegetables and flowers. Others ran awareness drives, teaching families and local communities about reducing landfill waste through composting. Every action was logged in GoSharpener Impact Profiles, earning SustainabilityScore points and showing measurable progress in waste reduction.
Why GoSharpener Is Different
While most awareness campaigns stop at telling people what composting is, GoSharpener gets students to actually do it, and track the results. By turning waste into resources, students see firsthand how their choices contribute to a healthier planet.
GoSharpener is India’s only platform where Gen Z students earn a Personal Sustainability Score, a real metric for their impact on the planet. Just like marks show your study performance, your SustainabilityScore shows your climate commitment in action.
