What is Biodiversity Day, and why is it important?
Observed every May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity raises awareness that biodiversity is the foundation of life, essential for sustaining ecosystems, economies, and human well-being. The 2025 theme, "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development," emphasises the need for conservation and human progress to go hand in hand. Biodiversity drives clean air and water, food security, and climate regulation, but is threatened by habitat destruction, pollution, invasive species, overexploitation, and climate change.
Protecting biodiversity links directly to the Sustainable Development Goals:
- SDG 15: Life on Land—protecting forests, wildlife, and terrestrial ecosystems.
- SDG 14: Life Below Water—safeguarding oceans, reefs, and marine life.
🇮🇳 India’s Four Biodiversity Hotspots: A Natural Heritage
India is privileged to host four global biodiversity hotspots—regions with extraordinary endemic life, ecological richness, and urgent conservation needs:
- The Himalayas (Eastern and Western): Home to over 5,800 plant species (2,000 endemic), with rare mammals and birds living across altitudes.
- Western Ghats: Hold 30 % of India’s flora and fauna, including thousands of endemic species, amphibians, reptiles, and birds.
- Indo‑Burma Region: Northeast India’s forests shelter rich diversity, including new mammals, reptiles, and tropical plant species.
- Sundaland (Andaman & Nicobar Islands): Island ecosystems with mangroves, orchids, and numerous endemic species.
Though these hotspots cover just 2–3 % of the planet’s land, they host more than half of all plant species and 43 % of vertebrate species, making them vital for global biodiversity.
GoSharpener’s Biodiversity Day: "Richness in Reels" in Action
On Biodiversity Day 2025, GoSharpener students explored this wonder of life through richness in reels—a creative, multimedia celebration of biodiversity. Here's what they did:
- Researched wildfire causes and solutions, recognizing climate change as a root driver.
- Took on roles—podcaster, interviewer, reporter, researcher—to bring conservation stories to life.
- Produced engaging Biodiversity Day videos and reels, highlighting plants, animals, habitats, and the threats they face.
This activity combined GoSharpener environmental activities for students, such as eco-clubs, biodiversity workshops in schools, knowledge sessions on species and ecosystems, and school speaker sessions by environmentalists.
Applauding Tomorrow’s Eco-Leaders
Huge kudos to our student biodiversity ambassadors:
- Maryam Zehra, Class 4, DLF Public School, Ghaziabad
- Namya Malhotra, Class 8, Bal Bharati Public School
- Tanvi Jain, Class 8, Mother Mary’s School
- Yachna Bansal, Class 10, Prince Public School, Delhi
Their activities are living proof of GoSharpener’s mission—and of the impact of biodiversity education in classrooms, inspiring students to be change makers.

Final Reflections: Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development Starts with GoSharpener
On Biodiversity Day 25, GoSharpener salutes our young eco-heroes—the richness in reels, the research, the compassion.
Small steps—like refusing plastic, caring for animals, composting, or creating biodiversity reels—build up to a profound global impact. When students unite in eco-clubs, create creative media, and visit nature reserve ecosystems, they exemplify sustainable development in schools and lifelong environmental citizenship.
Here’s to our change-makers: keep your passion, creativity, and care lighting the path ahead. Nature, our shared home, relies on your energy.
Let’s continue to love, protect, and celebrate biodiversity—each day, each reel, each action.
