🐬 Project Dolphin – A Conservation Initiative by Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Project Dolphin is a special mission launched by the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, on 15th August 2020 during his Independence Day speech. This national-level initiative aims to protect and conserve dolphins in both freshwater (rivers) and marine (oceans) ecosystems of India.
The project recognizes the urgent need to save dolphins, especially the Ganges River Dolphin, which is the National Aquatic Animal of India and an endangered species. These dolphins are found mainly in the Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, and their tributaries. They are almost blind and rely on sound (echolocation) to navigate and hunt.
🎯 Main Objectives of Project Dolphin:
-
Conservation of Dolphin Species – Protect endangered dolphins in Indian rivers and oceans.
-
Habitat Restoration – Clean and restore water bodies where dolphins live.
-
Pollution Control – Reduce industrial and plastic pollution that harms aquatic life.
-
Stop Illegal Activities – Ban harmful fishing practices and illegal hunting.
-
Public Awareness – Educate people, especially those living near rivers, about dolphin protection.
-
Scientific Research – Monitor dolphin numbers, track their health, and study their behavior.
🐋 Ganges River Dolphin: A Key Focus
-
It is India’s National Aquatic Animal.
-
Lives in major rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, and Brahmaputra.
-
These dolphins are functionally blind and find their way using sound.
-
Their population is reducing due to pollution, river traffic, and illegal fishing.
🌍 Why is Project Dolphin Important?
-
Dolphins are indicators of clean water — their presence shows a healthy river system.
-
Protecting dolphins helps protect entire aquatic ecosystems.
-
Dolphins help maintain the balance of nature in rivers and oceans.
-
The project supports India's commitment to biodiversity and sustainability.
🧠 Interesting Facts:
-
The Ganges River Dolphin is also known as the "Susu".
-
Dolphins breathe through a blowhole on top of their head and must come to the surface often.
-
The project is managed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
-
It is inspired by the success of Project Tiger, which helped increase tiger numbers in India.
✅ Conclusion
Project Dolphin is a major step by the Government of India under the leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protect endangered dolphin species. It promotes awareness, research, and clean water efforts. Saving dolphins means saving our rivers, oceans, and the future of our environment. As students, we can contribute by spreading awareness and keeping our surroundings clean.
