Van Mahotsav is a week-long festival in India that celebrates the importance of trees and encourages everyone to take part in protecting the environment. It is observed every year during the first week of July, when the monsoon season begins, making it the best time to plant trees. The word “Van Mahotsav” means “festival of forests,” and it was first started in 1950 by K.M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food. The main goal of this festival is to create awareness about deforestation, climate change, and the need for more greenery. Trees play a vital role in our lives—they give us oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, prevent soil erosion, bring rain, and provide food and shelter to animals and birds. During Van Mahotsav, schools, colleges, government offices, and local communities take part in tree-planting drives, rallies, and environmental awareness programs. This celebration is a reminder that we all share the responsibility of protecting nature. Even planting a single tree can make a big difference. As the saying goes, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.” Let us all promise to plant more trees and protect our environment for a greener and healthier future.
