Lightning is a discharge of static electricity that seeks the path of least resistance to the ground. Trees and humans are often struck because they can be the tallest objects in an area or offer a relatively conductive path for the electricity to travel. While wood itself is not a great conductor, the moisture within trees and the human body (especially with its high water and salt content) makes them more susceptible.
