World Environment Day – A Global Call to Care
Date: June 5
Theme (2025): Beat Plastic Pollution

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet. It was first established in 1972 during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment and officially launched in 1973 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Since then, it has grown into the world’s largest environmental platform, engaging over 150 countries in activities that promote sustainability and conservation.

We observe this day because our environment is under serious threat. Every year, over 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced globally, and only 10% of it is recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, rivers, and oceans, harming wildlife and entering our food and water as microplastics. Plastic pollution is now found in the deepest oceans, on mountain peaks, and even inside the human body. If we don’t act now, plastic waste in aquatic ecosystems could triple by 2040.

To improve the environment, we must start by reducing plastic use. Saying no to single-use plastics like straws, bags, and bottles can make a big difference. Schools and communities can organize clean-up drives, awareness campaigns, and recycling programs. Even small actions—like carrying a reusable water bottle or using cloth bags—can help reduce waste and inspire others.

Another important step is to support eco-friendly innovations. Many countries, including India, are promoting sustainable packaging, banning harmful plastics, and encouraging green startups. Citizens can also take part by planting trees, conserving water, and spreading awareness through posters, speeches, and social media. These efforts not only protect nature but also build a cleaner and healthier future for all.

World Environment Day supports Sustainable Development Goals 13 and 14—Climate Action and Life Below Water. These goals aim to reduce pollution, protect ecosystems, and promote sustainable living. By participating in this global movement, we become part of a powerful force working to restore balance to our planet.
