Earth Day: A Global Call for Environmental Action
Earth Day, celebrated every year on April 22, began in 1970 as a movement to increase awareness about environmental issues like climate change, pollution, deforestation, and resource depletion. Over the years, it has evolved into a global platform that inspires individuals, organisations, and governments to take concrete actions toward building a healthier, more sustainable planet.
This year, the message of Earth Day felt even more personal, especially after hearing our Prime Minister address a pressing concern during his Mann Ki Baat program. Surprisingly, India ranks third globally in textile waste generation. This statistic should make us pause and reflect on our consumption habits, particularly how frequently we purchase new clothes and what we do with the old ones.
Textile Waste: The Hidden Environmental Threat
There was a time when buying clothes was based on necessity. A shirt was replaced only when it was worn out or damaged. Today, consumer behaviour has changed drastically. Clothes are now bought for birthdays, weddings, festivals, and sometimes, for no reason. But what happens to the piles of unused or old clothes gathering dust in our cupboards?
The truth is, every piece of clothing has an environmental cost. From growing cotton, using dyes and chemicals, consuming water and energy, to finally ending up as landfill waste, the entire lifecycle of a garment contributes to carbon emissions. It's time to rethink how we buy and use clothes.
What Can We Do?
- Donate clothes in good condition to the needy.
- Avoid fast fashion and buy only when truly necessary.
- Choose sustainable materials, like recycled cotton or organic fabrics.
- Extend the life of clothes by repairing and reusing them.
GoSharpener's Earth Day Campaign: Learning Through Action
At GoSharpener, we chose to observe Earth Day a little differently this year. We focused on the carbon impact of clothing choices. Our students were encouraged to explore the environmental effects of textile production and the fashion industry's role in climate change.
Did you know?
The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions—more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Every time we buy new clothes without need, we add to this crisis.
Through our Earth Day toolkit, we sensitised students about:
- The carbon footprint of synthetic vs. recycled materials.
- How textile waste pollutes water and fills up landfills.
- Ways they can reduce the impact by making conscious clothing choices.
Young Changemakers Take the Lead
We're thrilled to share that many students across India participated in our Earth Day campaign with great enthusiasm. They showcased their understanding of sustainability through creative, thoughtful posts on the GoSharpener sustainability platform.
A big round of applause to these changemakers whose posts were selected and featured in school sustainability programs:
- Avyaan Jain, Class 5, Venkateshwar International School
- Vihaan Amalkiran Patkar, Class 9, Global Edge School, Kokapet
- Aashvi Gupta, Class 3, Gurukul The School
These students followed instructions, shared their sustainable actions, and inspired others through their commitment. Their posts were boosted on our platform to reach a wider audience and motivate more students to join the movement. GoSharpener is the best SDG platform for schools in India.
Lessons from April: Awareness, Action, Achievement
April was more than just Earth Month; it was an educational and transformational time for our student community. The activities not only helped students understand environmental problems but also empowered them to find solutions and become part of the change.
Students who weren't featured this time, don’t lose hope! Every month is a new opportunity. Follow the instructions in the upcoming toolkits, complete your sustainable activities, and get a chance to be recognised and appreciated.
Let’s continue to spread awareness, encourage participation, and build a green future where every action counts.
