Sustainable Development Goal 4 aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” Education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty, improving health and well-being, empowering individuals, and fostering tolerance and peace in societies. Despite progress in recent years, millions of children, especially girls and children in conflict-affected areas, remain out of school or receive poor-quality education. SDG 4 addresses all levels of education—from early childhood care to tertiary education—and emphasizes equal access, affordability, gender equality, and the development of relevant skills for employment and entrepreneurship. It highlights the need for trained teachers, safe learning environments, and inclusive policies that accommodate the needs of marginalized groups, such as children with disabilities or those from indigenous communities. The goal also promotes global citizenship education and awareness of sustainable development, encouraging learners to become responsible and active members of society. Achieving SDG 4 is not only about access to education but ensuring that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to lead productive, fulfilling lives and contribute to building a more just, equitable, and sustainable world.
