Onam is celebrated in Kerala and is celebrated from 26 August to 5 september . It is celebrated when Vishnu came as a dwarf Brahman . The king MAHABALI was hosting a festival . Vishnu came as the Brahman and asked MAHABALI for three paces of land . MAHABALI agreed . The Brahman took one step and that one step took half the kings land . Second step took another step of land . Finally there was no place to take the third step so the king offered his head. Impressed by his devotion he gave him a boon . The boon was that he come to earth once in a year . Now when the king come s down to earth what Malayalis call Onam . The Brahman is known as Vaman.
