International Biodiversity Day
Celebrating Nature’s Richness
International Day for Biological Diversity, also known as International Biodiversity Day, is celebrated every year on May 22nd. It was created by the United Nations to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity — the variety of life on Earth, including plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms.
Biodiversity is essential for healthy ecosystems. It helps provide food, clean water, medicine, and even regulates the climate. Without biodiversity, life on Earth, including human life, would struggle to survive.
Each year, the day has a special theme. The theme for 2025 is “Be Part of the Plan”, encouraging people, governments, and organizations to take action to protect nature.
On this day, schools, communities, and environmental groups around the world hold activities like tree planting, clean-up drives, nature walks, and awareness campaigns.
By celebrating International Biodiversity Day, we learn to respect and protect the natural world — because every species plays a role, and every action counts.
