On May 11, 1998, India conducted a series of five nuclear tests under the codename "Operation Shakti" at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. 

Prime Minister Vajpayee declared May 11 as National Technology Day in 1999. Since then, the day has been observed to honor the contributions of scientists, engineers, and technologists in advancing India's scientific capabilities .​

The theme for National Technology Day 2024 was "School to Startups – Igniting Young Minds to Innovate," emphasizing the importance of nurturing innovation from an early age and encouraging young individuals to engage in entrepreneurial ventures .​
