Accra, the capital of Ghana, is experiencing significant environmental concerns due to the increasing amount of textile waste generated. This issue is primarily driven by the influx of low-cost, fast fashion items, contributing to the growing volume of discarded garments in the city.

According to me and other reports the excessive textile waste in Accra has led to several negative environmental impacts.

Textile waste, especially non-biodegradable materials, accumulates in landfills and along streets, polluting the environment. This waste also clogs drainage systems, exacerbating flooding during the rainy season. Accumulated textile waste provides breeding grounds for pests and attracts harmful bacteria, increasing health risks, particularly in underserved areas of the city. Improper disposal of textiles using out dated technologies leads to the release of toxic chemicals into the environment, contaminating soil and water sources and posing a threat to both local ecosystems and public health. The Korle Lagoon has been suffering from pollution due the textile wastes and chemicals released from it .

Various initiatives, including recycling programs and campaigns promoting sustainable fashion, are being introduced in Accra to combat textile waste. However, more comprehensive waste management systems and public awareness efforts are needed to address the growing issue effectively. The excessive accumulation of textile waste in Accra is a pressing environmental concern. It has caused a huge loss of flora and fauna in Ghana. Therefore it is our duty to take steps for the preservation of the ecosystem of Accra .
