Martin Cooper, an engineer at Motorola, invented the first mobile phone, the DynaTAC, in 1984. The first mobile phone call was made on April 3, 1973 in New York City.

How the first mobile phone was invented

Cooper's team worked for three months to create the prototype.

The prototype was very different from the slim handsets we use today.

It weighed 1.7 lbs and had a 6-inch antenna.

It took 10 hours to charge and provided 30 minutes of use.

It was nicknamed "The Brick".

How the first mobile phone networks were developed

In 1984, the first base stations were installed in the UK.

Vodafone launched its network on New Year's Day, 1985, and Cellnet followed a few days later.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between 13 European countries in 1987 to launch a commercial service by 1991.

How the mobile phone has evolved

The mobile phone has evolved over time to include texting, social media, and camera capabilities.
