Chhath Puja, a significant festival primarily celebrated in Bihar and other parts of North India, particularly by the Bihari diaspora worldwide, is dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and his wife, Usha.


Chhath Puja is all about showing gratitude to Lord Surya for providing life and light to all the living beings. Chhathi Maiya bestow the devotees with good good fortune, good health, prosperity and success.


The festival further fosters community spirit when thousands gather at water bodies to pray and engage in various rituals. It is a time for communal bonding and cultural expression. Chhath Puja sums up the glory of Sun God and, above all, family unity, good health, and respect for nature.

Traditionally, it is said that Lord Rama and Sita performed Chhath Puja to express their gratitude after returning to Ayodhya when Rama was advised to atone for killing Ravana, a Brahmin. Local people in Munger, Bihar, believe Sita performed the Chhath vrat (ritual) there.

thus Chhath Puja is Bihar's original and biggest festival celebrated with fasting, feasting, and worship after Diwali. And is celibrated in Sonepur Cattle Fair  it is Asia's largest cattle trade fair which is held in Sonepur.
