Human memory works through three key processes: **encoding**, **storage**, and **retrieval**. **Encoding** is the initial process where information is transformed into a format suitable for storage, often through attention and rehearsal. **Storage** involves maintaining this encoded information over time in different types of memory systems, such as **short-term memory** (working memory) and **long-term memory**. **Retrieval** is the process of accessing and bringing stored information back into consciousness when needed. Memories are stored in various brain regions, including the **hippocampus** for new memories and the **cortex** for long-term storage. Effective memory relies on these processes working together to retain and recall information accurately.
