Indian bison, or Gaur as it is commonly called in Hindi, is a large bovine that is the state animal of Goa and Bihar. These large horned ox-like creatures are found throughout South Asia and SouthEast Asia, with evergreen forests and glades being its preferred abode. Today their decline in population has led to them being classed as vulnerable, as sadly, along with loss of habitat and food scarcity, Gaur are also hunted for their meat and horns. Currently, as part of widespread conservation efforts, Gaurs are legally protected in all states of India.
