Every year, on this beautiful day of 07 July, we mark the day of World Food Safety Day. This day aims to highlight the importance and make people aware of food safety and to promote various actions that assists prevention and management of food borne risks.

As we know, we have been experiencing problems like food shortage, food contamination, lack of food safety, wastage of food and many more! But why is this happening?

There are many reasons to this:-

(i) Incease in the no. of wars which disrupts food production worldwide.

(ii) Climatic problems like climate change, water scarecity, land degredation etc.

(iii) Plant and agricultural disease outbreaks lead to food contamination.

(iv) Economic shocks and hike in prices of food which lead to hunger in people going through poverty and economic crisis.

(v) Chemical contamintion can lead to acute poisoning or long-term diseases like cancer which is very dangerous as well all know.

There are so many reasons why such problems are being caused as mentioned above which are enough to make us realise that this is a really serious problem and should be treated before things go to an even greater extent. Even this year's food safety day's theme says "Food Safety: Prepare for The Unexpected". But what should be done?

First and foremost, things should start from our own homes. This can be done by always washing our food, hands, counters, cooking tools like cutting board, knives, forks etc. with warm water, properly washing our hands before and after touching/eating food, and following proper cooking practices in order to prevent nutritent loss.

We also need to keep harmful chemicals and poisonuss substances away from food in order to prevent them from getting damaged. Not buying excess food is another way of preventing food wastage.

Next off, governments and farmers should ensure proper agricultural practices like maintaining balance between manures, fertilisers and natural methods like crop rotation or field fallow in nutrient management, avoiding excessive use of chemicals which can damage food in long term, ensuring conservation of water to avoid water scarecity like developing drip system of irrigation.

Side by side, farmers should ensure that the environment is not harmed in following modern techniques. For this, famers should be properly educated about following better agricultural practices.

All in all, if we want to eat the healthy food items and stay away from foodborne diseaes and contamination, food safety is a must. Remeber that everything starts from within yourself. Lets try making everyday a Food Safety Day!

Happy World Fod Safety Day!
