HAPPY WORLD PARROT DAY 🦜 ♥️
Parrots are the comedians of the bird world. They steal your fries, mimic your laugh, and some can live 80+ years. They mate for life, solve puzzles, and throw tantrums when they’re bored. They’re not just pets — they’re personalities.
But here’s the hard part: *1 in 3 parrot species is in danger of disappearing*.
In the wild, parrots are “forest gardeners.” They eat fruit, fly miles, and drop seeds that grow new trees. Lose the parrots, and forests struggle too.
So why are they vanishing?
1. *The pet trade*: Thousands get ripped from the wild every year. Most die before they’re even sold. That cheap “hand-tame” parrot? It probably had a brutal start.
2. *Losing their homes*: Forests are cut for farms, wood, and cities. No trees means no nests, no food, no parrots.
3. *Climate chaos*: Droughts and storms are messing up breeding seasons and food supplies.
The Spix’s macaw from _Rio_ actually went extinct in the wild. Conservationists bred them in captivity and just started releasing them back in Brazil. It’s working — but barely.
*World Parrot Day, May 31*, started in 2004 to change this. It’s not just about cute bird videos. It’s about keeping parrots wild.
*How to help, for real*:
- Never buy a wild-caught bird. Adopt or only buy captive-bred from ethical breeders with paperwork.
- Support groups protecting rainforest. No habitat = no parrots.
- If you own a parrot: they’re not décor. They need space, toys, and company. They’re a 50-year commitment.
A world without the screech of macaws at sunrise or the chatter of cockatoos is a world we don’t want.
World Parrot Day is the reminder: keep them flying
