In general, local water systems may be considered an ordinary aspect of any city. In fact, local water resources have much importance in terms of their impact on the welfare of people, sustainability of ecosystems, and urban lifestyle in general. During the research conducted through my BioRAFT project, I had the chance to pay attention to some important issues related to local water pollution in relation to public health, biodiversity, and sustainable development.
Najafgarh Drain is one of those water systems that could serve as an example of the problem associated with pollution, water discharge, and other factors negatively affecting local water bodies. The problem associated with local water pollution is not limited to water pollution only since such a situation can influence the work of local aquatic ecosystems and lead to biodiversity loss, creation of unhygienic areas, and other negative outcomes.
In addition to the project itself, during this work, I tried to analyze one of the possible ideas concerning mesh filters, microturbines, and the production of clean water through such an installation. Despite being rather primitive, such an idea allowed me to see how innovation and sustainability are intertwined. Small design ideas can inspire young individuals to find practical solutions to existing environmental issues.
Finally, this project helped me realize the importance of taking action locally. It is natural to consider climate change and pollution as issues that exist globally, yet some solutions start with looking at what we have around us. Local drains, lakes, rivers, and green areas should be protected to make cities more sustainable and clean. Young individuals can help by raising awareness, cutting down on waste, and preserving water.
Najafgarh Drain project was not only a school assignment for me; rather, it was something through which I learned how to correlate research with environment, health issues, and youth innovation. This project made me realize that sustainability is a result of recognizing a problem and taking small but effective steps towards solving it.
