*Mother's Day: Celebrating the Heart of Every Home*
Every year on the second Sunday of May, we pause to celebrate Mother's Day — a day dedicated to the woman who often puts everyone else before herself. In 2026, Mother's Day falls on May 10.
*Why we celebrate it*
The modern Mother's Day started in the US in 1908, thanks to Anna Jarvis. She wanted a day to honor the sacrifices mothers make for their children. By 1914, it became an official holiday. Today, over 40 countries celebrate it, though dates differ. In India, the UK, and the US, it’s the second Sunday of May.
But the idea is much older. Ancient Greeks honored Rhea, the mother of gods. In India, we’ve always placed mothers on a pedestal — “Matru Devo Bhava” means mother is god.
*More than just gifts*
Mother’s Day has become about cards, flowers, and breakfast in bed. And those are great. Yet the real spirit of the day is gratitude.
A mother is often a child’s first teacher, first friend, and first safe place. She’s the one who stays up during fevers, remembers your favorite food, and worries even when you’re grown up. She juggles jobs, homes, and everyone’s moods — usually without complaining.
*How people celebrate*
- *India*: Kids make handmade cards, families take moms out for lunch, and social media fills with old photos and thank-you notes.
- *Worldwide*: In Mexico, it’s May 10 with music and food. In Thailand, it’s August 12, the queen’s birthday, with jasmine flowers. In Ethiopia, families gather for a big feast after the rainy season.
*The deeper meaning*
Mother’s Day isn’t only for biological moms. It’s for grandmothers, stepmoms, aunts, foster moms, and any woman who has shown motherly love. For those whose mothers aren’t around, it can be bittersweet — a day to remember and honor their memory.
At its core, the day reminds us not to take that love for granted. A quick call, a hug, or a simple “thank you for everything” can mean more than any gift.
Because a mother’s work is 24/7, 365 days a year. She deserves at least one day where the world says: we see you, we appreciate you, we love you.
*How will you celebrate your mom this year?*
