It is observed every year on March 22, focusing on the global water crisis and the need to ensure clean and safe water for everyone.
It was established by the United Nations in 1993. Originated from discussions at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro.
It's purpose was to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater , promote sustainable use of water resources , highlight that billions of people still lack access to safe drinking water.
