Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) is a crucial component of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, calling for "access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all". Energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity the world faces, powering economies, enabling education, improving healthcare, and fighting climate change.
Key Targets and Progress
SDG 7 aims by 2030 to ensure universal energy access, increase renewable energy usage, and double energy efficiency improvements, supported by investment in infrastructure and technology. While access to electricity grew to 92% by 2023, challenges remain as roughly 645 million people, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, lack access. Additionally, 2.1 billion people still rely on unsafe cooking fuels, and renewable energy adoption is lagging in heating and transport.
Why SDG 7 Matters
Achieving this goal is essential for climate action, as the sector produces most greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, it facilitates improved health outcomes, reduces gender inequality by lessening the burden of gathering fuel, and promotes economic development.
