The QWERTY keyboard is the standard layout for English-language keyboards and devices, named after the first six letters on the top-left letter row. Invented by Christopher Latham Sholes in the 1870s for typewriters, it was designed to prevent mechanical jamming by spacing out commonly used letters. It remains the dominant standard today.
