Dowry is a social evil that has existed in Indian society for a long time. Dowry means money, gifts, jewellery, vehicles, property, or other valuable items given by the bride’s family to the groom and his family at the time of marriage. Dowry is usually given in the form of cash, gold, household items, or expensive gifts.
Dowry is bad because it puts a heavy financial burden on the girl’s parents. Many families take loans or sell their property to give dowry. Even after marriage, some women are tortured, beaten, or mentally harassed for bringing less dowry. This causes great suffering to women and their families.
Dowry has also caused many deaths. Every year, about 6,000–8,000 women die in India due to dowry-related violence. This means nearly 20 women die every day because of dowry harassment. A large percentage of marriages in India still involve dowry, even though it is illegal.
The government has made a law called the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, which clearly states that giving or taking dowry is a punishable crime. People can be fined or sent to jail for demanding dowry. But even after this act, many people still take dowry because of social pressure, greed, and fear of society. This shows that laws alone are not enough; people must also change their thinking.
Dowry promotes gender inequality. Girls are treated as a burden, while boys are treated as a source of income. This mindset is unfair and wrong because boys and girls are equal.
To stop dowry, parents should refuse to give or take dowry. Young people should choose dowry-free marriages. Education, awareness, and strict enforcement of the law can help stop this evil practice. Society should support women who speak against dowry.
If dowry is stopped, society will benefit in many ways. Girls will be respected and valued. Families will be free from financial stress. Crimes against women will reduce, and marriages will be based on love, equality, and understanding.
In conclusion, dowry is a curse on society. Even though there is a law against it, dowry is still practiced. We must all take responsibility to say “No to Dowry” and work together for a safer and fairer society.
