Mental health stigma is negative societal attitudes, stereotypes, and discrimination against people with mental illnesses, creating shame, isolation, and huge barriers to seeking help, leading to worse outcomes, but it can be fought by education, changing language, promoting understanding, and challenging biased media portrayals. It manifests as public stigma (societal views), self-stigma (internalized shame), and structural stigma (systemic barriers in policies/laws).
