Everybody, regardless of sex, must have equal opportunity to participate in all areas of life through rights, obligations, and opportunities. This principle of equality between the sexes is a basic human right. It is also a critical ingredient for sustainability. It is recognized by the United Nations as Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5)
Despite the positive changes that have occurred in many countries over the past several decades, significant issues of gender inequality continue to exist. For many women and girls, educational opportunities, job opportunities, healthcare access, and participation in politics are often impacted by gender-based barriers. Gender discrimination and cultural norms create many barriers for women and girls and lead to a lack of equal access to resources, thus creating systemic disadvantages for half of our population.
A comprehensive approach must be taken to promote gender equality. Providing equitable and quality access to education, jobs, and health care empowers women and girls. Creating laws and legal mechanisms that prohibit discrimination and instituting programs to combat harmful stereotypes are also critical components for addressing systemic inequalities. Engaging men and boys as partners will further increase the likelihood of achieving gender equity.
Ultimately, achieving gender equality is beneficial for the individual and for the community and society as a whole. By eliminating these barriers and promoting equitable access to opportunities, we create an opportunity to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth, equality, and social justice.
