Navratri – The Festival of Devotion and Joy
Navratri is one of the most important and joyful festivals celebrated in India. The word Navratri means “nine nights,” and the festival is observed for nine days and nights in honor of Goddess Durga. It usually falls in the months of September or October and is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm.
Each day of Navratri is dedicated to one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Devotees worship the Goddess for her strength, wisdom, and protection. Many people observe fasts, chant prayers, and decorate their homes and temples with flowers and lights.
In different parts of India, Navratri is celebrated in unique ways. In Gujarat, people perform the famous folk dance Garba and Dandiya Raas. In West Bengal, the last four days are celebrated as Durga Puja, where beautifully decorated idols of Goddess Durga are worshipped. In Maharashtra and many other states, devotees arrange Golu (display of dolls) and hold cultural programs.
Navratri also teaches an important lesson—the victory of good over evil. On the tenth day, known as Dussehra or Vijayadashami, people celebrate Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana, and Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura.
Navratri is not just a religious festival but also a time for cultural activities, unity, and joy. It brings families, friends, and communities together to celebrate with music, dance, and devotion.
